I don't force myself. I take a couple of aspirin sometimes, drink a warm drink (tea, herbal tea). Make sure the room is a comfortable temperature (open a window), put on/take off blankets, pull down the shades so the room is darker. Sometimes taking a nice hot bath helps.
If all else fails, there's always Tylenol PM.

no need to count sheep in my bedroom I am up between 6 and 6.30 am so I am quite tired by 10pm and I drop off real quickly when I have job I do find it harder to sleep as I do worry about wether the job is panning out ok and then I take a Melatonin just one and I think its 3grams you can get it of the internet its a natural hormone

I count one two, one two repeatedly in my heart. Don't count the number of sheep. Because when you are counting a number, say 1564, you have to think of the next number, 1565. When you brain is working actively, you can hardly get into sleep.
If I still cannot sleep, I wake up my wife to sing me a lullaby. Her voice is sexy when she is half awake.
