best speaker . . . necessarily the best man?

Without dropping names (this teacher lived 500 years ago), this teacher proclaimed his student, widely recognized for his oratorical skills, as the most virtuous of men and that this was necessarily so. Do you accept this proposition?

I think this a most difficult question and will give you hints. He was passionate, with a well modulated voice, most well educated, an artist in arranging arguments, the ultimate politician.

Bonus points will go to whoever can name this teacher!
