Why does moss grow on some trees in the South?

This is Spanish moss (alos called the "air plant"), and it likes heat and high humidity.  Although it can absorb calcium and rainfall from the air, it has a preference for Southern live oak  and Bald Cypress tress.  This is because their leaves leach out high amounts of minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorous, which provide Spanish moss with an abundant supply of nutrients.
