cucumber - ah! - There is a way of peeling 0nions so that you do not cry - cannot remember - I believe you leave his head on.

Apparently it's the fructose in onions that causes stomach gas. Try cooking onions in a little oil until they're soft before adding them to foods - that will partially break down the sugar. Or steam them first. Also, reduce the amount you eat. A little onion goes a long way in my experience.

You can also try cooking onions with stomach gas-alleviating spices like ginger, cumin, cardamom, caraway, turmeric, fennel, asefoetida (hing). Asefoetida is extremely strong, just use a small pinch, and heat it first in oil to reduce bitterness. It also can be an onion substitute for people who can't do onions.

The trouble with cooking them slightly is that they lose their natural flavoring. Adding them to spices, same thing...no longer the real onion flavor :(

Well snap.. I didnt know onions had fructose.. I try to avoid it like the plague.. I have Chrones. Thank you Lerroy!

I've notice the same gassy problem from them, so I looked it up. I have diverticulitis similar, but not as bad as Chrone's, no problem Jenn.

Colleen's right you really can loose the flavor when you add a spice, not completely though, I would recommend cumin if you like it. Cumin goes pretty well with onions.

No, but they give me gas. I avoid tem as much as possible. I use fresh garlic instead. I love garlic

The older you get,the harder it is for your body to process them. Not only do they make your breathe stink or your skin smell if you eat too many, they also can give you stomach gas making you burp or indigestion. Top it off with the fact they remind you you're getting old when your body can't break them down so easily.....why do we keep eating them? LOL

I dont eat many things.. I have Chrones.. Just put one more thing on the list I need to avoid. At this rate I am going to live on Special K. LOL

Oh, God, did you just burp?

    Jenn

    Yes, yes I did!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

A onion a day keeps everone away.

Green bell peppers do, but not onions, raw or otherwise

They havnt yet on me though they do give you wind and intergestion

yes, If they're raw and sharp. Green peppers do that to me, too. But, if the onions are cooked and mild, and even mildly sweet, they don't talk back to me.

not for me.  one health doctor said we should about 1/4 to a 1/2 cup of onions a day.  I think that's one of the things that gave my dad a long life.  mom sliced him raw onions with meals, mostly dinner and he was strong and healthy til he died at 86 years old from a leg blood clot.  dr. oz said to prevent blood clots, eat raisins.  i eat them everyday.  my dad got too sedatary the last 5 years of his life. get up every hour, says the experts, even if you just walk and look out the window and back to the tv. my dad loved tv.  he would say he was a tv addict.

tabber - I have also heard how good onions are for you especially the circulation - I should eat more - keep just thinking about it - this is what happens when you cook for yourself. How interesting - I eat raisins. I put them in porridge and eat separately. I too am like your Dad - I am so sedentary - especially in the last year or so and am totally adicted to TV. I had an extremely busy life never thought I would end up this lump. You are right walking is the best form of exercise - ever -. Also good if you have stairs to go up and down - I do not. Go well.

    I don't know,but onion makes you cry.
