At the time of Jesus, opium was the drug of choice. They put it in water, and then added a sponge to the water to soak everything up. When you needed a pain killer, you sucked, they rehydrated the dry sponge with water and then sucked on the sponge. Worked very well in the dry climate too. The other drugs of choice included wines and beers. Egypt has had beer for thousands of years. They also understood and used stale wine, known as vinegar. One theory is that while many people were given vinegar via a sponge to keep them alive that much longer on the cross, Jesus was given an opium sponge to simulate death. Eye witness testimony in the form of a painting showed the body of Jesus being carried off after dark. And that would not have been done unless he was alive, and not dead.
