When they wanted to be missionaries at the church I went to in the 70s, they had to raise their own money by getting people to pledge to them . And they had to learn a LOT of scripture and memories it. Then , when they went into the field, it was usually in an unlivable or uncivilized country . Then, they'd meet another missionary and get married and have kids and decided that---that country they were in was NOT the place to raise kids. So, they came back home to the U. S.
