In the days of the original 6 NHL, the playoff format involved first place vs. third and second vs fourth. Looking back, that structure now seems absurd since you reward the second place finisher the luxury of playing the weakest playoff qualifier. And why finish third when finishing fourth is more advantageous?! Any thoughts as to the rationale of this format?

I was never aware of this format, but it does sound absurd. In thuse days it was important that the Canadiens had the top Guns. Maybe the league felt obligated to balance this out in some way. I must admit, I get tired of hearing about all those championships Montreal won. Think about it, they had a one in six chance of winning the championship befor the season even started and four out of six were guaranteed a playoff spot.
