When using a dishwasher, what would cause the dishes to have a soapy film left on them.

Its a 20 year old Whirlpool

Cheap detergent(?). They have stuff on the market to use to remove the soapy film during the rinse cycle. I can't remember the name but it's advertised on TV. Check the dish washing soap isle at the store.

You should also clean the dishwasher. The spray holes for the rinse water could be clogged with soap.

I have not changed what soap I have used ever since I have had this dishwasher for 20 years. However, I will take it apart and clean it. Thank you.

Changing the detergent can help. It's like shampoo. Using a new hair shampoo every now and then will strip the stuff left behind in your hair from the other shampoo.
