I can't help but smirk whenever I hear Americans refer to pasta sauce as "gravy" especially when it comes from Italian-Americans.

The sauce must have nothing extra added, if they think it's gravy. Never heard that before.
GRAVY?? Gravy is for roast beef and mashed potatoes!! We 'Italians' call it SAUCE!! I have heard some call it gravy and I go bonkers!! On the other hand, my grandma who spoke no English always called bell peppers 'mangos' And for years I called Bell Peppers mangoes.. LOL
That said, it's SAUCE!!!

The third link that CB posted says "gravy" so it must be gravy! haha kidding
I've never heard spaghetti sauce referred to as gravy until today!

Digger, who are these "Americans" that you talk to to hear them call spaghetti sauce gravy? I've never heard anyone in my life call spaghetti sauce gravy. We have beef gravy, pork gravy, chicken gravy but no spaghetti gravy. Were these "Americans" imports and didn't completely understand the language? Can you explain why you hate Americans so much that you find ways just to make fun of them, including making crap up? The only other thing we refer to as gravy is money.....someone who suddenly comes into a lot of money is considered to be "in the gravy now." I have no idea where or how the term came into being but a quick guess would be perhaps it's Italian.
So, let me get this straight. I've heard the term used, the internet shows it as being used but because YOU never heard it before...it "doesn't matter".
Colleen, you really DO make me laugh sometimes.

Colleen, actually there are a few Italian Americans that call it Gravy-- I even heard it used in a movie once- 'Goodfellows' I think it was.. This argument has been going on for many years. I think its a small group in New jersey or New York that started this gravy train. There are some that continue saying this though. it's real and it pizzes off most every Italian/Sicilian when the subject comes up. :)
Yes Digger, you have it straight. It doesn't matter. True Americans do not use gravy for spaghetti sauce. Whoever uses that is stupid and an import.
Glad I can make you laugh. How's Canada by the way? Still quiet with nothing to do and nothing to occupy your mind with?

I never heard that and my late husband was 100% Italian / American. His sisters made their own sauce and I was there for hundreds of their holiday dinners . They called it " Sugo" which means sauce.
Regardless of what you all say and think, there actually are Italians that insist on calling it gravy. Ironically its used in different context, example: 'pass me the gravy' yet these same people would never say 'Spaghetti gravy' They would say spaghetti sauce' almost like a compound word 'speghettisauce'. People do this.. :)
